Is it possible to starve with diabetes mellitus type 2: treatment reviews

The answer to the question of whether you can go hungry with type 2 diabetes is ambiguous. Some healers approve of this method of treatment, while others reject it. As for traditional medicine, it refutes the effectiveness and benefits of therapeutic fasting. However, practice suggests the opposite.

In most cases, diabetics who use this method of therapy, it is possible to normalize carbohydrate metabolism, thereby reducing blood sugar levels. Some of them claim that they completely get rid of the attacks of hyperglycemia.

Diabetes mellitus is an insidious disease that can progress quite quickly and provoke the onset of complications. Therefore, to control the pathology, you need to use all sorts of methods. One of them - treatment of fasting, which has special rules and certain contraindications.

The benefits and harms of therapeutic fasting

Unlike doctors, many researchers argue that abstinence in food or its complete failure for a certain time can reduce the severity of diabetes.

Sugar-lowering hormone insulin is in the blood only after eating food. Therefore, patients suffering from diabetes, it is recommended to reduce the intake of soups and other liquid food. Such abstinence will help reduce the concentration of insulin in the blood.

Those who practiced fasting with diabetes mellitus type 2, felt the positive effect of this technique. And some fasting completely cured of signs of hyperglycemia.

During abstinence from food in the body of a diabetic the following physiological changes occur:

  • all internal processes are started;
  • fatty acids, which were stored, begin to turn into carbohydrates;
  • improves the functioning of the pancreas;
  • in the liver, the amount of reserve substances is reduced, in particular glycogen;
  • the body manages to get rid of toxins;
  • reduced body weight in people with obesity.

However, during famine in diabetes mellitus, the specific smell of acetone in urine and saliva is possible. In principle, this method of treatment is permitted if the diabetic does not have serious acute and chronic pathologies, especially those associated with the digestive system.

In some cases, there may be negative effects from starvation in type 1 and type 2 diabetes. First of all, it is a state of hypoglycemia with the development of coma.

In addition, the patient may complain of indigestion, stress, and deterioration of general health.

Preparations for fasting

There is no consensus regarding the duration of therapy.

The most common therapeutic fasting for diabetes, which lasts about three to four days. Even in such a short time, a diabetic manages to stabilize the level of glycemia.

If the patient has made a decision on therapy with hunger, he must first perform the following actions:

  • at the first medical fasting, the procedure should be carried out under the supervision of a therapist and a nutritionist;
  • Before treatment, you must constantly check the concentration of glucose in the blood (before each insulin therapy or each meal);
  • 3 days before refusal to eat should eat products of plant origin only. Before fasting with type 2 diabetes, you need to take olive oil (about 40 g per day);
  • before abstaining from food, it is necessary to carry out a bowel cleansing procedure with an enema, thus, it will get rid of food debris, as well as of excess substances;
  • should be monitored for fluid intake, it should be drunk at least 2 liters per day.

Only after all the above listed rules are followed can you go on to complete starvation in diabetes. During the refusal of food, it is necessary to reduce physical exertion; A strong feeling of hunger in diabetes can be silenced by drinking large amounts of water.

When refusing to consume products, the body of a diabetic begins to rebuild, so on the first day without food he will have a feeling of weakness and drowsiness.

In addition, ketonuria and ketonemia develop.

Recommendations when leaving fasting

After fasting in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus comes to an end, a sharp return to the normal diet is strictly prohibited.

High stress on the digestive system and other organs can lead to extremely negative consequences.

To avoid various complications, a patient treating diabetes with starvation must adhere to the following rules:

  1. After completion of the technique, for the first two or three days you need to abandon the intake of heavy food. It should be included in the diet of nutrient fluid, gradually increasing the number of calories every day.
  2. In the first days after the resumption of food intake, the number of its intake should not exceed twice a day. In the diet include fruit and vegetable juices, whey and decoction of vegetables.
  3. A large amount of protein and salt should be discarded.
  4. After the treatment of diabetes with fasting is completed, patients need to eat more vegetable salads, vegetable soups and walnuts to maintain a normal level of glycemia.
  5. It is also recommended to reduce the number of snacks between main meals.

After completing the course of such therapy, the diabetic feels an improvement in general condition and lightness in the body. At the same time, the concentration of glucose in the blood will gradually decrease.

However, the treatment of diabetes of the first and second type of starvation is a very risky method. In the presence of serious diseases, especially peptic ulcer or gastritis, the use of this method is prohibited.

To cure diabetes, before you refuse to eat, you need to consult a doctor. A doctor's appointment plays a big role, since in some cases starvation may be the cause of the development of new serious diseases. The video in this article just raises the topic of fasting with diabetes.
